Outdoor Video Projections > Lesson 5 (Timothy Snyder)

About the "Lessons" Series

Since 2014, I have been working on a series of video projection pieces called “Lessons” that record my efforts to teach my children empathy and morality through culturally significant texts. We have created works responding to texts by Adrienne Rich, the New Testament, Gene Sharp, John Steinbeck, and James Baldwin.

About "Lesson 5 (Timothy Snyder)"

This piece was projected at Todd Hall on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University.

"The Founding Fathers tried to protect us from the threat they knew, the tyranny that overcame ancient democracy. Today, our political order faces new threats, not unlike the totalitarianism of the twentieth century. We are no wiser than the Europeans who saw democracy yield to fascism, Nazism, or communism. Our one advantage is that we might learn from their experience."

Timothy Snyder, ON TYRANNY

Snyder's book contains 20 things that average citizens can do to resist a dictatorship in the United States.
